Which Sunglasses Shape Suits Your Face? A Simple Guide

Which sunglasses shape suits your face

Most people choose sunglasses the way they choose a T-shirt: by brand and colour. Then the pair arrives, and something is off. Nine times out of ten the problem is not the model, it is the match between the frame and the face. The good news: there is one simple rule, and once you know it you can pick almost any pair with confidence.

The one rule: contrast

Frames look best when their shape contrasts with the shape of your face. Soft, rounded faces look sharper with angular frames; angular faces look softer with rounded frames. Everything below is just that rule applied to the five most common face shapes.

Not sure which shape you have? Pull your hair back, look straight into a mirror and trace the outline of your face with a marker on the glass (or take a selfie and trace it on the screen). Compare the result with the descriptions below.

Round face: go angular

Cheeks are the widest point, the jaw is soft and the length and width are about equal. Square, rectangular and cat-eye frames add the lines your face lacks. Avoid small round frames, they make the face look rounder.

Square face: go round or oval

A strong jaw, a wide forehead and a face as wide as it is long. Round, oval and softly rounded frames balance the angles. Thin metal frames work especially well; very square acetate frames repeat the jawline.

A slim oval with a hint of green: light, delicate, zero hard edges.

Oval face: almost anything works

Balanced proportions, slightly narrower chin, high cheekbones. This is the face every frame was designed on, so your only constraint is scale: keep the frame about as wide as your face. Aviators, squares and oversized models all work; just avoid frames that are much wider than your cheekbones.

Heart-shaped face: balance the bottom

Wide forehead, narrower chin, often with high cheekbones. You want to add width to the lower half: frames that are wider at the bottom, aviators, rounded shapes and light colours. Avoid heavy top bars and frames with decorative upper corners.

Oblong face: add width

Longer than it is wide, with a straight cheek line. Oversized, wide and deep frames shorten the face; so do thick temples and decorative sides. Avoid narrow, small lenses that make the face look longer.

Three details that matter more than you think

  • Width. The frame should be about as wide as your face at the temples. Too narrow and the face looks wider; too wide and it looks smaller.
  • Eyebrows. The top of the frame should follow your eyebrow line, not hide it. Browse the model reference on each product page: the first number is the lens width in millimetres, usually 50 to 58 for a medium face.
  • Colour. Black and tortoiseshell are safe on everyone. Light colours (clear, beige, pink) soften strong features; dark colours sharpen soft ones.
